Father Julien Gouyet found a house which conformed to the descriptions, and obviously was in a state of disrepair, having used the book as a guide. Most people didn’t believe him. Most people have tremendous difficulty believing that our world can be as strange as it truly is.

A decade later Servant of God Marie de Mandat-Grancey, a French nun, had been working at a hospital relatively nearby in the city of Smyrna (now Izmir). She urged two Lazarist missionaries, Fathers Eugène Poulin and Henri Jung, to help her find that very same house. They did so in 1891, having used the same book as Gouyet for their guide.

Sister Marie, who’d come from a noble family, secured the purchase of the house. She also made sure that the mountain on which the house stood was purchased as well. For a Catholic nun to have done so in the Ottoman Empire was no easy task, but she was practical, as well as persistent. As Foundress of Mary’s House, a position given to her by the Church, she took up the task of restoring and preserving the site.

The House of the Virgin Mary remains under the Church’s care to this very day. Pope Leo XIII gave his blessing upon the house in 1896, and Pope St. John XXIII granted plenary indulgences upon it in 1961. Popes Paul VI (1967), St. John Paul II (1979) and Benedict XVI (2006) have each paid visits in the years since.

Sr. Marie De Mandat-Grancey Foundationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10170589488017766850noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8156780494957806821.post-8700057344615319482020-04-11T08:45:00.001-04:002020-04-11T08:45:12.979-04:00Pandemic Novena Day 9, Easter Sunday!

Let us pray for Mary's children in the world, those suffering, those dying and those who have died from this pandemic. We begin First Saturday and finish on Easter Sunday, praying for the new life and hope of the Resurrection to permeate and overcome the darkness and sorrow of this Lent 2020.

Let's call to mind Sr. Marie who, during her life, was in charge of the dispensary and hospital in Izmir, Turkey as we pray for all medical personal around the world. Sr. Marie dispensed all remedies and healing medicines to her staff and was in charge of the daily operations of the hospital. She was a most tender and attentive nurse maid to the sick and suffering.

Sr. Marie found, restored, and protected the House of Mary in Ephesus. The humble home where St. John brought Mary to safety after Jesus' death and resurrection. In this home Mary was cared for and protected. On this holy ground on the little hill behind the modest house, Our Mother Mary created and prayed the first Stations of the Cross and lived out her remaining days praying them each day...upon this holy ground her tears fell. As we stay in our homes this Holy Week in these remaining days of Lent, may we welcome Mary to dwell with us and pray the Stations of the Cross with us. May the Mother of Sorrows bring us her peace even amidst our current sorrows as we unite them with hers as she endured the Passion and death of her crucified son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

May Sr. Marie, who restored and protected Mary's House in Ephesus, pray for our restoration and protection...and resurrection to new life in Christ as we anticipate Easter. Amen.
Let us pray for Mary's children in the world, those suffering, those dying and those who have died from this pandemic. We begin today, First Saturday, and finish on Easter Sunday, praying for the new life and hope of the Resurrection to permeate and overcome the darkness and sorrow of this Lent 2020.

In this home Mary was and cared for and protected. May the Mother of Sorrows bring us her peace even amidst our current sorrows as we unite them with hers during the Passion and death of her crucified son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

May Sr. Marie, who restored and protected Mary's House in Ephesus, pray for our restoration and protection...and resurrection to new life in Christ as we anticipate Easter. Amen.

Please pray the Sr. Marie prayer.
Theotokos. Let us unite in prayers of thanksgiving to God for Servant of God, Sr. Marie de Mandat-Grancey who valiantly and generously invested all her heart and effort into finding and preserving Mary's House in Ephesus, Turkey. It is in the safety of this little home where Mary, Mother of God did live out her final days after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Our Lord. So much to beg of the Father today through the intercession of Mary as we begin 2019. Dearest Sr. Marie, please pray for us. Carl Schulte for a very precious gift and memory he has given us all. The original title for his book on the life of Sister Marie was A Guiding Star! Fr. Schulte, Erin and I exchanged hundreds of emails with the subject line AGS (A Guiding Star) as we assisted him in 2009 beginning around the Feast of the Annunciation until Christmas of that year as he finished up his book. Nine months. Then the birth of the book. Then on the Feast of the Epiphany the book was revealed to some very special people in the Church who all had marvelous things to say, much of which you find on the book jacket. Timing is everything.

In his journal relating the story of Mass celebrated by Fr. Jung on Christmas Eve in 1893 at Mary's House, Fr. Poulin, Sister Marie's dear friend and confidant, tells of the peace and joy of the stable-like scene. Fr. Schulte derived much from Fr. Poulin's journal to write his book The Life of Sr. Marie de Mandat-Grancey and Mary's House in Ephesus and describes this particularly poignant scene for us in which he uses the prophetic term "guiding star" as a name for Sister Marie; a name that has become so precious to us all.

When he finally reached Mary's Home, he changed his clothing, donned his cassock, put on his vestments, and began Christmas midnight Mass.

The altar was makeshift. The room had a bed on which the candles burned. Three crew members were attendants of the Mass. The two dogs, kept outdoors, made an attempt to get indoors. They climbed on the roof and poked holes in it, and the rain came dripping down the altar, making it difficult to keep it out of the chalice. Christmas seemed more realistic with the ox and three horses looking on. There was also a little hearth fire. The sky was totally dark, but to Father Jung there was a light that shone. He felt it. This was the first Christmas midnight Mass in Mary's Home since...he did not know for how long. He felt certain that Mary was with him in prayer, as surely as she had been in Bethlehem. He did say a prayer for Sister Marie, who was his light, his guiding star, for she had directed his thought to coming here. It was she who enabled him to overcome his unbelief and give him this first Christmas Mass in Panaghia- Capouli. All of this! it had to be shared and told her. He owed her this joy. [pgs 126-127]

I recall when I first read those words. I had my own little epiphany of the enormity of this cause for Sister Marie. The potential for peace. And now as I reflect I can only stand in awe of God's plan that began with Sister Marie over 200 years ago for hope for peace for these times, if we will only respond.

Sister Marie is a guiding star who continues to shine brightly even on this Feast of the Epiphany 2016 ...and perhaps her light will also help prepare us for the second coming which we anticipate with great joy. As I meditated on these things at Mass this morning I was struck by the last line of the Nicene Creed. "I look forward ....to the life of the world to come." The glorious day of the return of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace! The Triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Our Mother, Queen of Peace. Only God knows when. Again timing is everything. And God's timing is perfect.

So we wait in joyful anticipation with Sister Marie. Just as in her life while on earth, so also now as she lives with God in eternity, Sister Marie continues to guide us, shedding light on the path that leads us to Jesus through Mary. Sister Marie points the way to the humble little home on a hill in Ephesus where around Mary's hearth all are welcome to be inspired, pray, and honor Mary, Mother of God who will intercede for us during this Christmas season, and always, with her Son, the Baby King.

Servant of God, Sister Marie de Mandat-Grancey, guiding star, show us the way.
As we approach May 31st, the 100th Anniversary of the day our dear Servant of God, Sister Marie de Mandat-Grancey left this world to be with God, please join us as we honor her memory. Below please find the Allocution pronounced at the Funeral of Sister Marie by Archbishop Zucchetti. Please thank God for Sister Marie, without whom we would not have the little piece of heaven on earth called Mary's House. At every apparition site The Blessed Mother comes to us. At Mary's House we go to her. She invites us into her home and heart; she welcomes us and being the perfect Mother she tends to us in the most perfect way. Sister Marie responded with a generous heart to God's call and because of her we now can visit this tiny jewel of the Church, a haven of peace in the world, where both Muslims and Christians pray side by side in peace as they honor Mary. Truly a cause for hope and joy. Thank you Sister Marie. Please pray for us.
love and our veneration.

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">It is only a filial complaint directed to His fatherly kindness, by us,
who are so saddened by the departure from this world of so many people, whose
presence in our midst was a token of His blessings, an appeal to His love and a
comforting example of supernatural life.

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">These departures, for some time now, are succeeding one another quickly
in Smyrna: man and women servants of
God, priests, as well as religious, are saying “goodbye” to us after such a
great and long service rendered to the Church, to young people, as well as to
the ministry of souls and to suffering humanity.

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">Today, it is the turn of the one that, by your tears, you would like to
make live again, in order to see her again in her capacity as the superior of
the French Hospital, of her school and of her model sewing workshop – active,
energetic, generous, giving of herself and not sparing herself to help
everybody, but especially the indigent and the miserable. An abundantly provided soul with natural and
supernatural talents, combining with the nobility of a great French family, the
enthusiasm and resources of an inexhaustible heart, the admirable Sister Adele
Louise Marie de Mandat-Grancey, during a stay in Smyrna that lasted 30 years,
has been among us the type of strong woman depicted in Scripture, the true
daughter of charity, providence of the poor, consolation of the afflicted,
support of socially outcast and uncomplaining poor families, refuge and savior
of young people exposed to worldly danger and seductions.

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">Full of good works, her long earthly career has been remarkable, above
all as she was nearing her death, because of such an outstanding dignity of
life, which imposes respect, inspires confidence and maintains affection. “The dignity of life,” wrote Monsignor Gay,
“that is, the loyalty, the candor, sincerity, the manner grave and sweet, the
carriage, without stiffness, the nobility without arrogance, authority without
being demanding, urbanity without affectation.”
The motive of such a constant virtue was, in her, the spirit of, the
taste for and the practice of sacrifice.

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">It is to Sister de Grancey that we owe, among many other benefits, the
purchase of Panaghia-Capouli, the
hill of the Virgin, the goal of pious pilgrimages and one of the religious
glories of our city.

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">Such a life of detachment, of dedication, of virile virtues, of a
kindness that was always ready to give generously and untiringly – by what kind
of death was she to be crowned? Saint
Vincent de Paul promised to his daughters that the love of the poor would cause
them to smile upon their deaths. To
smile at what is most frightening to nature, is that possible? “To smile at death, to salute it, as the
angel of deliverance, to see in it only god, who comes, invites, extends His
arms, isn’t it a gift without price!”

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">The Holy Spirit, by praising the strong woman, had already given a
premonition of this mysterious smile:
“the one, who has opened her hands to the poor and extended her arms to
welcome them, this is the one who will smile on that last day of her life – et ridebit in die novissimo.” Our Sister de Grancey, the strong woman, the
charitable woman of our time, could not fail to smile at death, with this kind
of smile, which is an award and a
prelude: an award for the tears shed and
wiped, a prelude of celestial happiness, to which death gives access: ridebit
in die novissimo.

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">For these privileged souls, which charity purifies and causes to smile,
in view of eternity, which is nearing, is there a purgatory after their
death? We may believe that their passage
to glory does not tolerate any delay, as the impulses of charity produce in
them, in advance, the effects reserved to the expiatory flames of divine
justice. There is nothing surprising in
that, since charity, which flourishes in physical and spiritual works of
Christian mercy, entails, in this very world, the assurances of a
beatitude: Beati misericodres! said Jesus.

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">Dear Daughters of Charity, have you understood? Our Lord considers you blessed and reveals to
you, from this moment forward, the sentence that He will pass on you, at the
Last Judgement: Venite benedicti Patris mei, precipite regnum quod vobis paratum est!

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">Admirable and consoling prerogative of charity! It beatifies those who have it and practice
it. Would not therein lie the intimate
reason for the absence, in your congregation, which is so large, of canonized
saints? During the passage of three
centuries, not one of you has been elevated by the Church to the honor of
altars. However, since Saint Vincent de
Paul, this priest with a heart as vast as the universe, since Vincent de Paul
had launched you into the civilized and barbaric world in search of suffering,
in order to alleviate it and make it bearable, in search of abandoned children,
in China and elsewhere, in order to transform them into angels in heaven, in
search of orphans, in order to become their adoptive mothers, because the grace
of your vocation has created in you this marvel: a heart which combines with the charms of
virginity, the attraction, the loves, and the tenderness of maternity; since
that time, I say, you are like a large army, an army comprised of about 30,000
sisters spread out over the globe and which is in constant renewal. What nation, what beach, what island has not
seen your white cornet, symbol of virginal purity and maternal love, the
approach of which sooths, delights, and consoles the sick, the wounded, the
dying and makes the small child smile, who has not known the caresses of his
mother? And in the midst of this
innumerable phalanx, this multitude of heroines, not one of them has been given
the honors of beatification, not even the great and sublime figure of the
venerable Louise de Marillac, your first mother, in whom we enjoy seeing more
than one trait of similarity with the venerable Sister de Grancey. Louise de Marillac, neither has she, this
great Christian, yet been placed among the blessed that the Church proposes to
public veneration. This conduct on the
part of the Church souls surprise us if we were not permitted to see in it a
witness given to the sanctifying power of charity. This is because charity, outside official
canonization by the Church, through divine prerogative, beatifies and canonizes
secretly the souls: Beati misericordes. It is in the intimacy of a private conversation
that one day I was presenting to the venerable departed this way of envisioning
the fact the Daughters of Charity do not yet have any canonized saints. With this penetrating and gentle look, which
was usual in her, she was content to limit her response: “Monsignor always has good things to tell
us.” Beautiful and holy soul! How the evidence of these good things must
now make you happy! Repose in the joy,
the happiness of Our Beloved Lord!

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">

<span style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style",serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">Smyrna, your second country, will long keep the souvenir of your blessed
name, which will tell it how much charity, by its super naturalizing power,
enlarges and lifts still more, already great souls, and assures them of the
respect, the recognition and the admiration of the world, as well as the
rewards of infinite love, which is God Himself:
Deus caritas est.
